Many contractors will tell you that traditional, or “air-source,” heat pumps are not designed for our climate, but that is simply not the case.  Heat pumps have gotten a bad reputation over the years for the “cold” heat and reliance on electric resistance heat as a backup.  The fact is, however, that today’s models are markedly better than the original models from 20+ years ago.  Output temperatures and efficiencies have risen to the point that many people with oil or gas heating systems are now switching to the electric heating source.  In most cases, a house heated by a heat pump can qualify for a special heating rate from PECO that discounts the electric usage (over 600 kWh per month) by about 50%.  (Do you use a lot of electricity anyway?  If so, heating your home with a heat pump system can save you even more money).

For those who are concerned about relying on the electric backup heat when it gets extremely cold out, we recommend a “Dual Fuel” set up where a natural gas, propane or oil furnace is used as the backup for when the heat pump cannot keep up with the heating demands of the house.  Lennox's newest heat pump, the XP14, provides very high heating and cooling efficiencies when set up in this manner. Regardless of which system design is best for you, your indoor unit (air handler or furnace) should include a variable speed blower to increase efficiency and humidity control.

Just have a room or two that need heating and cooling?  A ductless split system may be just right for you.  These systems can use a single outdoor unit to heat and cool up to three interior spaces – perfect for providing additional capacity to the enclosed porch, sunroom, basement, or even the room over the garage.  These systems can also be a great way to add air conditioning and a backup heating source to a home with hot water heat.  Make sure you check out the Mr. Slim Featured Product for more information.  We also carry LG ductless split systems.

Mr. Slim  M-Series Multi-split Heat Pump

Heat Pump Technology (MSZ, MXZ Models)
Mitsubishi Electric’s new line of outdoor units uses inverter compressor technology (Variable Frequency Drive) to provide exceptional indoor high-speed cooling and heating. In response to outdoor temperature changes, the system varies the compressor speed, thereby reducing power consumption for extra energy savings. The system performs only to the level needed to maintain a constant and comfortable indoor environment, much like a cruise control on a car maintains a set speed.

Optimum Comfort Year-Round
Unlike conventional units that start and stop repetitively, inverter units are able to detect subtle changes in room temperature and adjust compressor speed automatically. The result is less room temperature variation and a more comfortable climate.

Seven Combinations
The MXZ30TN system gives you seven different indoor unit combinations. You can install two or up to three indoor units for up to 30,000 Btu/h cooling and heating.
